It's tempting to ascribe human characteristics of bravery and fearlessness to Saildrone Explorer SD 1078, an uncrewed wave-rider that dove into the heart of the devastating Hurricane Fiona in the Atlantic Ocean this week. SD 1078 sent back stomach-flipping footage of massive, churning waves on Thursday.
Autonomous ocean vehicle company Saildrone shared two versions of the video captured as the drone battled 50-foot (15-meter) waves and winds in excess of 100 mph (160 km/h). Fiona strengthened into a Category 4 storm this week, meaning it was generating sustained winds of over 130 mph (209 km/h).
In the second video, one side of the screen shows a top-down look at the hurricane's movement, with the drone's location marked near the eye. The other side shows the heaving footage from the drone's camera.
Saildrone is working with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to monitor and study severe storms in a new way. It's been the norm to send brave airplane crews into hurricanes, but Saildrones can get a different perspective by surfing at sea level.
"The data Saildrone vehicles are gathering will help the science community better understand rapid intensification, giving people living in our coastal communities more time to prepare," said Saildrone founder Richard Jenkins in a statement on Thursday.

Saildrone is operating seven drones in the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico this season. Last year, a Saildrone delivered the first footage gathered by an uncrewed surface vehicle (USV) from inside a major Atlantic hurricane when it sent back video from Hurricane Sam.
Fiona already walloped Puerto Rico and the Dominic Republic, causing extreme flooding and knocking out power. On Thursday, the National Hurricane Center warned of impacts to Bermuda. The storm could reach Atlantic Canada by Friday.
Research has linked the human-caused climate crisis to more extreme and destructive hurricanes. Scientists need all the data they can get on the formation, intensification and movement of hurricanes as they seek to protect human life.
BERLIN, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Germany has declared southern France a coronavirus high-risk area, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) said on Friday, which means returning travellers need a negative test or proof of vaccination or recovery from COVID-19 to avoid quarantine.
The RKI also removed the Netherlands from its high-risk list.
Both decisions go into effect on Sunday.
If tourists or returning German nationals are coming from a high-risk country they must first quarantine, which can be ended with a negative test after five days.
The new rules for France apply to travellers returning from the regions of Occitanie, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Corsica and the overseas territories of Guadeloupe, Martinique, Réunion, Saint Martin, Saint Barthélemy.
The RKI also declared Algeria, Morocco, Thailand and Mexico as high-risk areas.

MUMBAI, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Indian government bond yields are expected to open lower on Thursday, tracking a sharp decline in U.S.
yields, although sentiment is expected to remain cautious ahead of the Reserve Bank of India's policy decision that is due on Friday.
The benchmark Indian 10-year government bond yield is seen in a 7.24%-7.29% band, a trader with a private bank said.
The yield ended at 7.3340% on Wednesday.
"U.S. yields have sharply corrected within a day, after seeing nearly 10 basis points rise daily since the last few days, and this should result in a gap-down opening for local bond yields," the trader said.
"Still, after some reaction at open, yields may be range-bound ahead of (the) all-important monetary policy decision."
U.S.
yields nosedived after the Bank of England said it will buy long-dated U.K. bonds to restore financial stability in markets rocked globally by the new British government's fiscal policy plans.
The 10-year U.S. yield eased as much as 32 basis points on Wednesday, after hitting 4.02% earlier in the day for the first time since April 2010. The bond was last trading at 3.75% yield.
Meanwhile, all eyes would be on the RBI's policy outcome, with many market participants expecting the central bank to raise interest rate by 50 basis points for a third consecutive time on Friday.
The RBI has already raised rates by 140 basis points between May and August to tackle inflation that has stayed above its tolerance level for eight straight months through August.
Meanwhile, traders also await the Indian government's borrowing calendar for October-March.
Analysts expect the market to absorb the bond supplies for the rest of this fiscal year, although at higher yields.
The government is scheduled to borrow a gross 5.86 trillion Indian rupees ($71.98 billion) in October-March, which could increase by another 160 billion rupees after New Delhi failed to raise the planned amount from the sale of floating rate securities earlier.
